Why are different coloured cleaning cloths used?
In professional cleaning, a colour-coded cleaning system is a common solution. Its purpose is to ensure that the same cloth or mop is not used in areas with different hygiene risk levels.
The most common colour markings:
- Red – Toilets, urinals, and other highly contaminated washroom areas.
- Yellow – Washbasins, taps, mirrors, and bathroom surfaces.
- Green – Kitchen surfaces, food preparation areas, worktops that come into contact with food.
- Blue – General surfaces, guest areas, offices, furniture, doors.
Colour codes may vary from business to business, but the most important rule is to always use the same tool for a given area, thereby significantly reducing the risk of cross-contamination.
